The image below is an excerpt from a map available from the Library of Congress' American Memory Project. Entitled as "Americae sive quartae orbis partis nova et exactissima descriptio. (Auctore Diego Gutiero Philippi Regis Hisp. etc. Cosmographo. Hiero Cock Excude. 1562)," this map was published in Antwerp in 1562, by Gutiérrez, a Spanish cartographer, who collaborated with Hieronymous Cock, a noted engraver operating in that city, to produce this spectacular and ornate map. The map utilizes names and labels that had been popularized in Europe following Columbus' 1492 voyage.
