1807 landscape rendering

William Roberts painted this watercolor image of the Harpers Ferry landscape, which was later published in modified form as an aquatint in 1808 or 1809, entitled "Junction of the Potomac and Shenandoah, Virginia." Note the canons added to the front of the armory building to indicate its function, and the bateaux on both rivers. This image was reproduced in The Virginia Landscape: A Cultural History, by James C. Kelly and William M. S. Rasmussen, p. 53 (Howell Press, Charlottesville, Virginia, 2000).
