Corporal Denver Moore, Jr.

Sir, we shall never forget your ultimate sacrifice to this country. When the Memorial Walkway is constructed, the manner in which HSOBI and the Village of Brooklyn will honor you, shall rival honors shown to any fallen hero this country has ever seen.

We reached out to Denver's sister, Wilma Moore-Carter to share details and memories of her brother. She was only thirteen years old when the tragedy of Denver's death shattered the Moore family and the Village of Brooklyn. She connected me to Denver's high-school sweet heart, Lillian Slaughter. Lillian graciously invited me to stroll down memory lane and share Denver's short life with me. Below are her words, fondly remembering our fallen hero. HSOBI extends our thanks and gratitude to this courageous woman. We have included his military record that we found on the Vietnam War Wall of our fallen heroes with remembrances left by those honoring his service. HSOBI's remembrance will be added after it has posted.

Denver Jr. was a very active person. He played shortstop and 3rd base on the Brooklyn Blue Jay's Khoury League Baseball teaam. He played trombone in Lovejoy's High School band, and he was a great and popular forward and guard on the LHS Wildcats Basketball team. Denver was very popular and adored by many girls in high school! Soon after he finished his junior year of high school, he was hired for the summer at American Steel Foundry and worked right alongside his father, Mr. Denver Moore Sr. Denver Jr. was very popular not only with the girls but with everyone because he had a wonderful personality and swag. He was humorous and fun to be around. He also was a sharp dresser and always looked handsome and neat! Denver Jr. joined the Marines in 1967 shortly after his high school graduation because he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps. Sadly, Denver became a casualty of the Vietnam War at the tender age of 19 shortly before his birthday in 1969.

The entire town of Brooklyn, Illinois, and everyone in it was deeply saddened and torn with grief over the loss of Denver Jr. He was an obedient and respectful son, never getting into trouble or causing problems for his parents. He also was a great brother to all of his siblings. Brooklyn was proud of him and he is one of our town heroes for his exemplary dedication to our country as a Marine.
